The historic brining shed in Lubec took a big hit during last week’s blizzard.
Those who live in the area say the building has been in disrepair for quite some time, leaving it vulnerable to the elements.
Lubec Landmarks is trying to rescue it.
At high tide, the building sits in the water.
Folks are gathering donations to repair it, and to lift it up on taller pilings.
“This is the last standing herring smokehouse in the country. If it goes, there are no more. So it’s imperative that we save it and keep it as a living history museum for all that come there. It’s comforting to know that people in Maine still value this little piece of history.”
