“Camping For Food” is a local tradition that benefits the Newport Area Food Bank … Boy scouts Luke Charette and Lucas Leighton stopped by TV5 to tell us more about it.
<Camping For Food has been a Troop 63 event since 2010. This will be its seventh year in existence. It was started by Troop 63 in an effort to augment the national Scouting For Food campaign and has grown to include Pack 63 as well as Crew 63 in its efforts. The Troop, Crew, and Pack come together to comprise Scouting in Newport.
Traditionally Scouts gather on the front lawn of Shop and Save in Newport on Friday night and camp there until Sunday evening. This year we will be spending an extra day there as Friday is Veterans’ day. We will be arriving on site throughout the day on Thursday and will be departing on Sunday morning. In past years we have collected on average of two thousand pounds of food and between 1500 and 2000 dollars in donations. We are hoping to do better than that this year given the extra day that we will be there.
All proceeds from this event go to benefit the Newport Area Food Bank that is located on North Street in Newport. This is a critical time of year for folks as Thanksgiving is just a few weeks away. This effort is of huge significance to the food bank as it helps the organization get through that major Holiday.
