Volcanos, kiwis and more featured at Walks & Talks
BAR HARBOR — Naturalist Zack Klyver will share photos and stories about his recent three-week trip to New Zealand during the next Talks & Walks co-hosted by the MDI YMCA and the Jesup Memorial Library, on Thursday, March 20 at 10 a.m. in the Gladys Franklin O’Neil Periodicals Room of the Jesup, 34 Mount Desert Street.
Mr. Klyver, who works for the Bar Harbor Whale Watch and is owner of FLUKES: International Whale Tours, will share his exciting search for wildlife and adventure in and around the north and south islands of New Zealand, including a tour of the Hobbiton movie set from “Lord of the Rings” and he’ll tell how director Peter Jackson took over the town of Matamata. Find out which side of the road Kiwis drive on, the cost of a New Zealand speeding ticket, and what to pack and not pack if you head to Kiwiland yourself. Discover what it feels like to hike through the Tongariro National Park, which has a volcano that erupted in 2012 and provided the setting for Mordor and Mount Doom in the “Lord of the Rings” movies.
Afterward, program attendees are welcome to return to the Y and use the track or equipment there for free. This is part of Talks & Walks offered in partnership with the MDI YMCA. For more information, contact Angela Balacco at the Y, at 207-288-2211.
