Grand Lake Stream Hatchery Tour and Salmon Milking

November 14, 2013 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm

The Downeast Lakes Land Trust is pleased to invite the community to the Grand Lake Stream Hatchery for a tour and an opportunity to milk salmon. The Grand Lake Stream Hatchery got its start in 1868, when native landlocked salmon eggs were collected and matured in a spring in the woods. The hatchery developed over time into a modern structure on the bank of the stream and supplies landlocked salmon to the West Grand Lake catchment and far beyond. Some 70,000 to 80,000 salmon are propagated at the Grand Lake Stream Hatchery annually. That is over 90% of total estimated salmon raised and stocked each year in Maine. To participate in milking salmon, please wear hip boots!
