The storm that brought us snow, mix and rain Wednesday night and Thursday will continue to move away to our northeast today. Moisture wrapping around it will provide us with plenty of clouds today and the chance for a few snow showers as well. The best chance for snow showers will be over northern areas with mainly dry conditions expected elsewhere. Temperatures will be seasonable with highs in the mid-30s to around 40° this afternoon. Chris Ewing

Updated 6 months ago

From  the WABI-TV5  & CW Forecast Center:

Weak high pressure will produce generally fair and seasonably cool conditions here today, but a gusty west breeze will make it feel a bit colder than it actually is. A new storm will approach New England from the west tonight and then move east through northern New England Saturday. The new storm will bring another burst of snow and mixed precipitation to Maine Saturday, with most locales, likely picking up between 1 and 4″. Colder air will begin to spill back into New England Sunday on a gusty northwest breeze. Arctic high pressure will build south out of central Canada and bring another round of much colder than normal conditions to Maine Monday and Tuesday. A storm developing off the Southeastern U.S. Coastline early next week might bring more snow and wind to parts of New England next Wednesday into Thursday.

From the WABI-TV5 & CW Forecast Center:

Low pressure moving through Quebec today will bring us a combination of snow, mix and rain falling today, mostly during the morning hours. Southern and coastal Maine will see a quick coating to 2″ tonight and then a change to rain by daybreak but further inland the precipitation will remain snow for a longer period of time and thus from Augusta to Bangor on east towards Princeton a general 2 to 4″ will pile up before the change to rain. From Farmington to Dover-Foxcroft and Lincoln on north most towns will pick up between 4 and 8″ before the snow mixes with sleet and rain later today.

High pressure will slide east of our region today allowing clouds ahead of our next storm system to start moving into the state. We’ll start out with bright sunshine this morning but the sunshine is expected to fade behind increasing clouds as the day progresses. The daylight hours will remain dry so overall today looks like a good day just not as bright as the past few days. Temperatures will be a bit milder today with highs in the low to mid-30s this afternoon. Low pressure approaching from the Great Lakes tonight will push precipitation into the area especially near or after midnight. Precipitation will start as snow in most locations with snow and mix likely along the coast. Temperatures will range from the 20s to around 30° for nighttime lows.

Sun to Increasing Clouds Today

Chris Ewing

Updated 6 months ago

From the WABI-TV5 & CW Forecast Center:

The ridge of arctic high pressure that produced the unseasonably cold weather across our region since Sunday will slip east into the Canadian Maritimes today. As the high moves east of our region today clouds will begin to move into New England from the west. The clouds will be associated with a storm riding east through the Great Lakes region. The storm will bring a period of precipitation to our region later tonight and Thursday morning. Precipitation will start out as snow all across the Pine Tree State tonight, but with the storm sliding up to the west of New England early Thursday a developing southerly breeze will cause the snow to mix with or change to rain over southern and coastal Maine Thursday morning, while it remains mostly snow across the far north. Snowfall later tonight and Thursday morning will range from an inch or two along the coastline to 2 to 5″ across the north.

Snow Tapering Off, Still Windy & Cold This Afternoon, Sunshine Returns Friday

Todd Simcox

Snow will continue to gradually wind down from west to east across the state this afternoon. Any additional accumulation will be very light with just 1″-2″ possible. Temperatures will hold steady this afternoon with readings mainly in the teens. North/northwest winds will remain gusty, making it feel much colder. The gusty winds will also cause areas of blowing and drifting snow which in turn will reduce visibilities in some locales so use plenty of caution on the roads today. Lingering snow showers will wind down early tonight followed by clearing skies. It’ll be a frigid night with low temperatures expected to bottom out in the low to mid-single numbers below 0° north and near or a little above zero elsewhere.

Major Winter Storm Tonight into Tomorrow

Chris Ewing

Updated 6 months ago

A rapidly intensifying storm moving though the Ohio River Valley today, through Southern New England later tonight, and into the Gulf of Maine tomorrow morning will bring us a variety of precipitation forms along with strong gusty winds. As we go into the rest of this evening we’ll see periods of moderate to heavy snow, sleet, freezing rain, and rain. Rain and freezing rain along the coast will finally change to snow late tonight but accumulations will be on the lower side because the majority of the precipitation will fall before the changeover occurs. Temps fall into the teens tonight and we could even see some single digits in far northern locations. It will become windy as well with blowing and drifting of snow likely. Needless to say, travel will continue to be dangerous tonight and into the early morning hours tomorrow.

Major Winter Storm Arrives Today, Heaviest Snow North

Todd Simcox

Updated 6 months ago

From the TV 5 Forecast Center:

Areas of snow (away from the coast) and mixed precipitation/rain (along the coast) will continue to spread across the state this afternoon becoming steadier and heavier as the afternoon progresses. Temperatures will top off in the 30s to near 40° initially today then fall into the mid-20s to mid-30s from north to south across the state this afternoon. Snow will continue especially from Dover-Foxcroft to Lincoln northward tonight while a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain falls over the rest of the state as low pressure moves through the Gulf of Maine and pushes some slightly warmer air into coastal and inland locales. Plain rain is likely along the immediate coastline and outer islands for a time tonight too. Precipitation will be heavy at times tonight. As the storm moves by to our south tonight, much colder air will begin to filter into the state causing any mix and rain to gradually change back to snow after midnight from west to east across the state. Nighttime temperatures will bottom out in the single numbers to low and mid-teens from north to south. Northerly winds will be strong tonight too so expect areas of blowing and drifting snow.
