A new high school basketball season starts Friday as teams begin the quest for championships.
The MDI girls made it to the state title game in February falling to Lake Region. Despite losing to very talented seniors in Hannah Shaw and Sierra Myrick, the Trojans think they can make a run again this year.
It was a slow start for the UMaine womens basketball team Wednesday night. The Black Bears trailed Central Connecticut State by eight at the half but outscored the Blue Devils 48-22 in the 2nd half.
Zarko Valjarevic scored 17 points, including a buzzer-beating jumper in overtime, to lift Maine over Wagner 82-81 at the Cross Insurance Center on Tuesday night.
Till Gloger tied a career-high with 21 points, Shawn Lawton added 18 and Aaron Calixte had 10 points and nine assists for Maine (1-5).
Former Bangor high basketball player Tristan Thomas had been coming off the bench for division one South Carolina Upstate. He was scoring eight points a game in just ten minutes of playing time.
UMaine womens basketball has turned things around. After losing two straight games the Black Bears hosted a tournament over the weekend and made it a two game win streak.
The University of Maine women’s basketball took on Boston College at the Cross Center Sunday afternoon.
They were coming off a win over Brown in this weekend’s Thanksgiving Tournament.
UMaine womens basketball will host a tournament this weekend. The schedule has changed a bit as the snowstorm kept Wright State from making the trip. They’ll play Brown Saturday afternoon and Boston College Sunday afternoon at the Cross Center in Bangor.
UMaine hockey is off to a slow start this season.
