CINDY BLODGETT IS ONE OF FOUR FINALISTS FOR THE WOMEN’S COACHING JOB AT UMAINE…. BLODGETT VISITED HER ALMA MATER THIS WEEK AND MET WITH THE SEARCH COMMITTEE…. TWO OTHER HAVE ALREADY MET WITH THE COMMITTEE ONE MORE FINALIST WILL BE INVITED TO CAMPUS NEXT WEEK…..
BLODGETT IS THE ALL TIME LEADING SCORER AT THE UNIVERSITY, 3005 POINTS…. SHE PLAYED FROM 1994-98, SHE WENT ONTO PLAY PRO BALL IN THE WNBA AND HAS THREE YEARS OF ASSISTANT COACHING UNDER HER BELT…. UMAINE IS TRYING TO REPLACE ANN MCINERNEY WHO RESIGNED AFTER THIS SEASON.

HE WAS TIED FOR 25TH AFTER THE FIRST ROUND OF THE NCAA REGIONAL, JESSE SPEIRS OF BANGOR SLIPPED OFF THE PACE WHEN HE SHOT A SECOND ROUND 81. SPEIRS IS NOW TIED FOR 80TH AT PLUS 13……ABOUT TWO HUNDRED GOLFERS ARE COMPETING. THE REGIONAL IS IN ILLINOIS AND SPEIRS GOLFS FOR TEXAS CHRISTIAN. FINAL ROUND ON SATURDAY.

OLD TOWN BASEBALL PLAYER JARRETT LUKAS HAS BEEN NAMED ONE OF THE TWO FINALISTS FROM MAINE FOR THE GATORADE PLAYER OF THE YEAR.
LUKAS IS A PITCHER AND SHORTSTOP AND IS HITTING 480 THIS SEASON FOR THE COYOTES. LAST YEAR HE HIT 585.
LUKAS IS ALSO A GREAT STUDENT AND A MULTI SPORT STANDOUT AT OLD TOWN.

MARK NORWOOD OF TRENTON HAS THE NEW STATE RECORD AFTER HIS TURKEY WAS OFFICIALLY SCORED. THE BIRD WEIGHED 26.91 POUNDS AND SCORED A 73.41. NOWROOD BEAT THE OLD RECORD BY THREE AND A HALF POINTS…
THE BEARD WAS NINE AND A HALF INCHES LONG AND THE SPURS ONE AND 1/16th OF AN INCH. THE BIRD WAS TAKEN IN LAMOINE ON NORWOOD’S BEAR SIGHT AND IT TOOK HIM THREE DAYS TO BRING IT IN CLOSE ENOUGH FOR A CLEAN SHOT. NORWOOD’S GARAGE WALL IS A TESTIMENT TO HIS HUNTING ABILITY, HE PROUDLY DISPLAYS HIS PAST TROPHIES ALONG WITH HIS SONS’. NORWOOD WHO OWNS BAR HARBOR AUTO IS ALSO TRYING TO ATTAIN HIS MAINE GUIDE LICENSE. HE’S HAVING THE BIRD MOUNTED.

SHE PITCHED THE 2nd NO HITTER OF HER CAREER, SHE HAD ONE LAST YEAR AS WELL.

CLARK THOMPSON KNOWS AS MUCH ABOUT THE HISTORY OF HARNESS RACING IN THE STATE AS ANYONE. AND WHILE RESEARCHING THE HISTORY OF A HORSEMAN NAMED ED BITHER, HE REALIZED THAT BITHER WASN’T IN THE HALL OF FAME. THOMPSON CAUGHT WIND OF AN EXHIBIT THAT WILL BE ON DISPLAY THIS SUMMER AND MANAGED TO GET BITHER RECOGNIZED AS PART OF THE EXHIBIT.

JOSH SOARES HAS JOB SECURITY FOR THE 2007-2008 SEASON… HE SIGNED A ONE YEAR CONTRACT WITH THE PEORIA RIVERMEN OF THE AHL. AFTER HIS SENIOR SEASON AT MAINE HE STAYED BEHIND IN ST. LOUIS AFTER THE FROZEN FOUR. HE TOOK A SHOT WITH THE RIVERMEN WITH AN AMATUER TRYOUT CONTRACT…HE IMPRESSED ENOUGH TO GET THIS NEW DEAL. SOARES SCORED 112 POINTS IN HIS MAINE CAREER.

Miller leaves Team USA

Olympic medalist and former World Cup
champion Bode Miller is leaving the U-S ski team.
Miller told men’s coach Phil McNichol of his decision following
a meeting at the headquarters of the U-S Ski and Snowboard
Association this week.
The fiercely independent Miller has often been at odds with the
association and there had been rumblings that he would leave the
team for several years.
He has been a part of the U-S team for 11 years, but will travel
and train independently if he competes in the 2008 World Cup
season.

THE DOWNEAST FLEET RACES WILL BE HELD IN CASTINE THIS WEEKEND. ABOUT 20 TEAMS WILL BE COMPETING FOR THE CUP IN THE TWO DAY EVENT.
TWO TEAMS FROM EASTERN MAINE, GSA AND MDI HAVE PROVEN TO BE COMPETITIVE IN RECENT YEARS.
FOUR OTHER TEAMS FROM THE SOUTHERN PART OF THE STATE WILL BE ON HAND AS WELL AS OTHERS FROM AROUND NEW ENGLAND.
RACING STARTS FROM THE MAINE MARITIME ACADEMY DOCK AROUND 10 SATURDAY MORNING.

MARCUS IS ON A BIT OF A ROLL HAVING WON HIS LAST 9 FIGHTS…. SEVEN OF THEM BY SUBMISSION.

THE 39 YEAR OLD INTENDS TO RAISE AWARENESS OF WATER ISSUES IN THIS COUNTRY.

THE HUSSON COLLEGE GOLF TEAM WILL TRAVEL TO THE NCAA DIVISION THREE NATIONAL TOURNAMENT IN INDIANA THIS WEEKEND. THE EAGLES HAVE BEEN TO THE NATIONALS FOUR TIMES IN THE LAST EIGHT YEARS, BUT IT’LL BE THE FIRST TRIP FOR MOST ON THIS YEARS TEAM.
