Beach to Beacon recap

Duncan Kibet of Kenya raced past
three rivals in the final 600 meters to win today’s T-D Banknorth
Beach to Beacon 10-kilometer road race by six-tenths of a second.
Kibet finished the seaside course in Cape Elizabeth in 27
minutes, 51-point-seven seconds. Fellow Kenyan Evans Cheryiout was
second and John Yuda of Tanzania was third.
Luminata Talpos of Romania dominated the women’s race. She
jumped out to a big lead about two kilometers in and never looked
back, coming in at 32 minutes, 30 seconds.
Ukrainian Natalyia Berkut placed second, followed by Jessica
Ruthe of New Zraland.
More than 4,800 runners from 21 countries and 41 states
completed the course on a cool but humid morning.
The top Maine finisher was Ayalew Taye of Cape Elizabeth, with a
time of 30 minutes, 47 seconds. Emily Levan of Wiscasset, at 35:01,
was — for the third year in a row — the first Maine woman to
cross the finish line.

THE BANGOR COMRADES BLASTED NOVA SEAFOOD TO WIN IT’S OPENER IN THE STATE LEGION BASEBALL TOURNAMENT. BANGOR WON 12-7, GORDIE WEBB AND TOM CREWS OF BANGOR EACH HIT A HOMERUN. SHANE WALTON ACCOUNTED FOR FOUR RBI’S… PITCHER JIMMY COX ALLOWED SEVEN EARNED RUNS BUT WAS CREDITED WITH THE WIN.

ABOUT 5,000 RUNNERS WILL TAKE PART INCLUDING THE ELITE RUNNERS FROM AFRICA AND MAINE’S BEST LIKE DONALD DRAKE WHO MADE A NAME FOR HIMSELF RUNNING FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF MAINE.

THE FORMER UMAINE PLAYER HAD BEEN COACHING AT WISDOM HIGH SCHOOL THE LAST FOUR YEARS. GUERETTE HELPED WISDOM WIN THE STATE TITLE AS A PLAYER IN HER SENIOR SEASON IN 1998.

GONYAR WAS A STANDOUT ATHLETE AT ORONO HIGH SCHOOL, HE WENT ONTO PLAY BASEBALL AT UMAINE AND AFTER MAINE SPENT THE BULK OF HIS HIGH SCHOOL TEACHING AND COACHING AT BUCKSPORT HIGH SCHOOL… THE LAST COUPLE YEARS HE’S BEEN WORKING AT WHITE’S SPORTING GOODS.

Maine Amateur champion from Minot

Kristin Kannegieser of Minot shot a
final round 77 today to win the Women’s Maine State Amateur golf
tournament by six shots.
Kannegieser, who plays at Martindale Country Club in Auburn,
took a three-shot lead into today’s final round of the 54-hole
tournament at Natanis Golf Course. She finished with a final score
of 233, or 17 over par.
Micki Meggison of Gorham and Leslie Guenther of Norway tied for
second with scores of 239.
