HAMPDEN ACADEMY SENIORS HAVE HAD TO DEAL WITH THE DEATH OF A STUDENT FIVE TIMES DURING THEIR TIME AT THE SCHOOL. THE LATEST IS SOCCER PLAYER NATE CLARK. CLARK DIED THIS SPRING AND STUDENTS AT THE SCHOOL ARE PLANNING A SOCCER TOURNAMENT NEXT MONTH IN HIS HONOR. THEY HOPE TO RAISE ENOUGH MONEY TO HAVE SCHOLARSHIP EACH YEAR FOR HAMPDEN ACADEMY STUDENT.THE WEEKEND OF JUNE 20th THEIR WILL BE A SOCCER TOURNAMENT WITH 10 TO 20 TEAMS… A KIWANIS BREAKFAST AND A BATTLE OF BANDS.ALL TO ENSURE THE MEMORY OF ONE OF THEIR CLASSMATES.

IT WAS A TERRIFIC RUN FOR THE HUSSON BASEBALL TEAM… AS THE NUMBER SEVEN SEED IN THE NCAA D-3 REGIONAL THE TEAM WON TWICE BUT TODAY FACED THE TOP SEED EASTERN CONNECTICUT STATE… THE EAGLES FALL 18-3 AND THE SEASON IS OVER… HUSSON TOOK THE LEAD 2-1 AND TIED IT AT TWO BUT THEN EASTERN CONNECTICUT GOT INTO THE BULLPEN. ETHAN GUERETTE AND CHRIS MAGUIRE AND NICK ARTHERS EACH WITH AN RBI….MAINE BASEBALL NEEDED A SWEEP TODAY AGAINST STONY BROOK TO TASTE THE PLAYOFFS…. THEY DIDN’T GET IT AND SO THE SEASON IS OVER FOR THE BLACKBEARS… THE BEARS GOT CRUSHED IN GAME ONE 17-7…. THE SEASON ENDED ON AN UP NOTE AS THE WON GAME TWO 6-5 IN TEN INNINGS…

JOES COLLEGE BASEBALL TEAM.ED RICE WILL HAVE ANOTHER FORUM AT THE BASEBALL HALL OF FAME NEXT MONTH. THE BANGOR TEACHER AND AUTHOR WILL SPEAK OF THE IMPACT THAT LOUIS SOCKALEXIS HAD ON MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL.SOCKALEXIS GREW UP AND IS NOW BURRIED ON INDIAN ISLAND.RICE MAINTAINS THAT HE ESSENTIALLY BROKE THE COLOR BARRIER 50 YEARS BEFORE JACKIE ROBINSON.AN AMAZING ATHLETE HE ENDOURED TREMENDOUS RACISM. Husson to play USM

Husson University baseball team will enter the NCAA III New England Regional as the #7 seed and will face #2 seed U. Southern Maine on Wednesday, May 13 at 7:45 pm.  Eastern Connecticut State University will host the 8-team regional site.  The Eagles finished the regular season with a program record 31 wins (31-12) and captured their first ever NAC title and trip to the NCAA.  Husson finished the season at 18-2 in their last 20 games.  Senior catcher Nick Arthers (Belfast, ME) was named NAC Player of the Year and first year outfielder Kyle Vanidestine (Bangor, ME) was named NAC Rookie of the Year.

Bryan Brown (Bangor, Maine)earned second team New England Small College Athletic Conference honors for men’s tennis in doubles play on Friday. Brown also was honored with the Clarence Chaffee Sportsmanship Award, given annually to the individual who best combined and displayed a high standard of tennis coupled with the highest levels of sportsmanship. BROWN IS THE COLBY TEAM CAPTAIN.

A NICE CROWD ON HAND AND A FULL FIELD READY TO BE CALLED TO THE GATE BY TRACK ANNOUNCER WAYNE HARVEY.AND WHAT HAPPENED IN THE FIRST RACE OF THE SEASON WAS KIND OF A WEIRD WAY TO KICK OFF THE SEASON OF 61 RACE DATES.TWO HORSES BATTLED THEIR WAY AROUND THE HALF MILE TRACK TO A DEAD HEAT. A TIE FOR FIRST PLACE EVEN WITH A PHOTO FINISH.”BACK SPIN” AND “VASVIXEN” BOTH WINNERS IN RACE ONE OF 2009. THE TIME OF THE RACE WAS 1.58 AND THREE.

TUFTS BEAT THE EAGLES 17-1 IN FIVE INNINGS.HUSSON WITH JUST THREE HITS TODAY AS THE JUMBOS IMPROVED TO 39-1 ON THE SEASON. HUSSON WILL PLAY AGAIN TOMORROW IN THE DOUBLE ELIMINATION EVENT.UMAINE SOFTBALL PLAYER COURTNEY GINGRICH HAS USED UP HER ELLIGIBILITY IN THAT SPORT BUT WILL PLAY FIELD HOCKEY IN THE FALL FOR THE BLACK BEARS WHILE SHE FINISHES UP HER DEGREE.GINGRICH IS A GOALIE.UMAINE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR BLAKE JAMES WAS A FINALIST BUT WAS NOT HIRED BY FLORIDA GULF COAST UNIVERSITY TO BE THEIR NEW A-D.
