HE’S BEEN COACHING FOOTBALL FOR FOUR DECADES, FROM 1978-80 HE LEAD THE ORONO RED RIOTS TO THREE STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS AND SPENT THE LAST FIVE YEARS AS HUSSON’S DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR… NOW DR. NILES NELSON TAKES OVER FOR GABBY PRICE TO COACH HUSSON UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL…..Dr. Niles Nelson who has served for five years as Defensive Coordinator for the Husson Eagles Football Program has been named the new Head Coach effective immediately. Nelson replaces Gabby Price who stepped down two weeks ago after seven years on the job. Nelson earned his Ph.D. in Physical Education at Florida State University. During his career Nelson has coached both high school and college players. He coached at The Citadel, University of Rhode Island, Nichols College and Methodist College and Nelson has served on the faculty at several universities. He worked as Athletic Director at Kennebunkport High School, coached several high school sports and has held administrative positions in the Bangor School System. “Whenever you have someone on your staff with outstanding credentials that can step in and continue moving football forwards, it’s a much easier and positive transition,” said Husson Director of Athletics Cindy Connelley. “The new football conference we have recently joined will present NCAA opportunities and Niles Nelson is most capable of meeting this challenge. He is a first class person with both academic credentials and diversified football experience. Having been on the staffs of Rhode Island, The Citadel, Methodist and a graduate assistant at Florida State, to name a few, along with an exceptional high school record, he has coached on both sides of the ball and will begin a new era of Husson University football”. “In continuing to work with this outstanding program, I’m excited about the coming season, the new football conference and I am ready to go right now,” said Nelson. “While the first order of business is to get the staff in place, a priority is to contact every Husson University football player and assure them that we will continue forward. We’ll play with enthusiasm and desire, guaranteed”. From 1978-1980 he led Orono High School to three undefeated seasons and three state championships. “Niles knows football players, high school, college and the transition in between,” said former Orono High School standout player Steve Abbott, who went on to captain the football team at Harvard and is now Chief of Staff to U.S. Senator Susan Collins. “He was a wonderful coach for me at Orono High School and he will be a perfect fit for Husson.” “For seven years, we have had extraordinary football leadership in Gabby Price. Now, in Dr. Niles Nelson, we have another extraordinary head coach. We surely have been twice blessed. It doesn’t get any better than this,” said Husson President Bill Beardsley. The 2009 season features nine games in the new Eastern Collegiate Football Conference, (ECFC) including NCAA Division II opener at Merrimack College, Springfield College and the October 17th Homecoming opponent Norwich University. The remainder of the schedule includes Mt. Ida, Becker, SUNY Maritime, Gallaudet, Becker and Anna Maria. Last fall highlighted a post season ECAC game after a season-best 7-3 record. With most of the offense returning and some holes to fill on the defensive side of the ball, the team will strive to improve their performance. “I love football” said Nelson. “Gabby Price gave me a wonderful opportunity to coach and be part of this program and he was great to work for. Now it’s my turn to make a difference for these student athletes. I can’t wait to get started.” Thanks to Husson University for this article.
The university announced Wednesday morning Dr. Niles Nelson is taking over the role left behind by Gabby Price.Nelson has been the defensive coordinator under price for the last five years, he coached at Bangor and Orono high schools before that. Price gave up the job two weeks ago. He had been at the helm for 7 years, restarting the program in 2003.At the end of last season, the Eagles were ranked 5th in New England. Price served as athletic director for five years then stepped down in 2008 to concentrate on his coaching duties.
