Hunters Caught With Excessive Number of Snowshoe Hares

Five hunters from Massachusetts and one from Maine are accused of killing too many snowshoe hares.

Wardens say 52-year-old Andrew Mays of Southwest Harbor was among them.

Wardens got a tip that led them to the group on Great Duck Island, off the coast of Southwest Harbor.

Authorities say the six men had killed 87 hares during their day of hunting…by law each hunter is only allowed to kill four per day…so they killed over 60 more than authorized.

One of the Massachusetts hunters was summonsed for hunting without a license.

Great Duck Island is owned by The Nature Conservancy.
