Police: Sanford Woman Likely Died of Exposure

Sanford police say the body of a woman last seen in late January has been found.

Police said Thursday that they believe Kerry Rear died of exposure after wandering into the woods behind a convenience store.

Her body was found by a game warden only about 200 yards from the store.

She was last seen alive on January 22.

Rear was last seen in surveillance store video, disoriented, wet, and in stocking feet.

She left the store, then returned a short time later asking about making a bank deposit.

Police don’t know exactly what happened, but are drawing some preliminary conclusions based on where Rear’s body was located.

“You’re not bothering the police when you call them and say, ‘this doesn’t seem right to me.’ It could save a life. It could save somebody else’s life. We want people to pay attention.” Says Sgt. Matthew Jones, of the Sanford Police Department.

An autopsy will determine the official cause of her death.
