George Hale’s Perspective on Sports

WANTED: PITCHING.

THAT’S THE *WANT AD* THE RED SOX SHOULD TAKE OUT, ACCORDING TO GEORGE HALE…GEORGE…

LET’S FACE IT.

FOLLOWING THE RED SOX OVER THIS PAST MONTH HAS BEEN FUN…LOTS OF FUN ON MOST GAME DAYS.

LET ME COUNT THE WAYS.

BIG PAPI CONTINUES TO ACT LIKE A YOUNG PLAYER WITH BOOM IN HIS BAT DESPITE THE FACT THAT AT NEAR 41 HE IS READY TO PULL THE CURTAIN DOWN ON A HALL OF FAME
CAREER.

JACKIE BRADLEY JR. BECOMES THE FIRST RED SOX TO BE NAMED PLAYER OF THE MONTH SINCE 2011.

HE WAS 37 OF 97, BATTING .381 WITH 15 EXTRA BASE HITS AND 24 RBI’S OVER THE LAST 27 GAMES.

J-B-J LED THE LEAGUE IN ON BASE PERCENTAGE AND WAS SECOND IN BATTING AVERAGE AND SLUGGING PERCENTAGE.

AND LET’S NOT FORGET A 29 GAME HITTING STREAK.

TO TOP IT OFF HE BECAME A NEW FATHER THIS WEEK.

RED SOX SHORTSTOP XANDER BOGAERTS IS CURRENTLY ON A HITTING STREAK OF 26 GAMES.

DURING THIS STREAK HE’S HITTING .385 WITH FIVE HOMERS AND 20 RBI’S AND LOOKING LIKE THINGS WILL CONTINUE FOR AWHILE.

AND THEN THERE IS MOOKIE BETTS.

HIS RECENT TWO-GAME SHOW OF HOME RUN POWER WAS AS SPARKLING AS ANY IN THE LONG HISTORY OF BOSTON BASEBALL.

BETTS IS ONLY THE THIRD SOX PLAYER TO HIT FIVE HOMERS OVER A TWO GAME STRETCH, WHICH TIED THE MAJOR LEAGUE RECORD.

BETTS NOW HAS 14 ROUND TRIPPERS AND AT THE CURRENT PACE WOULD END UP WITH 43.

ONLY THE FABLED TED WILLIAMS PULLED THAT OFF AT AGE 23.

SO WHAT’S NOT TO LIKE RIGHT?

BOSTON IS IN FIRST PLACE AND ONE OF THE HOTTEST TEAMS IN BASEBALL.

WELL, I DON’T WANT TO RAIN ON OUR PARADE BUT CONSIDER A FEW FACTS.

IN THE ORIOLES SERIES THE SOX WON THE FIRST TWO BUT THEN LOST THE NEXT TWO EVEN THOUGH THEY SCORED 16 RUNS.

BOSTON ENDED THE ROAD SWING 3-4—LOSING GAMES AFTER THEY SCORED 5,9,9, AND 7 RUNS.

THE TEAM AVERAGES 6 RUNS A GAME WHICH IS THE BEST IN THE MAJORS.

ABOUT THE ONLY WAY TO SAY THIS IS THAT THE PITCHING WILL DOOM THIS TEAM IF SOMETHING ISN’T DONE TO TURN IT AROUND.

JUST LOOK AT THE CHICAGO CUBS

THEIR TEAM ERA IS 2.81, BATTING .259 WITH 30 HOMERS 139 RUNS.

RED SOX NUMBERS ARE MUCH BETTER BUT THE TEAM ERA 4.11 THIS WEEK REVEALED THE WELL KNOWN PROBLEM THE JOHN FARRELL FACES.

BOSTON HIT FIVE HOME RUNS IN A GAME AND LOST AND LAST NIGHT GAVE UP SEVEN, COUNT THEM, SEVEN LONG BOMBS LOSING 12-7.

PITCHING WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO BE THE STRONG SUIT OF THIS TEAM BUT CERTAINLY NOT THIS BAD.

THE SOX ARE YOUNG, TALENTED AND AGGRESSIVE.

HOWEVER, IT WILL BE IMPOSSIBLE TO JUST HIT YOURSELF TO A PENNANT OR WORLD TITLE.

NO TEAM CAN EXPECT TO HAVE THE OFFENSE CARRY YOU EVERY NIGHT OF THE LONG SEASON.

SO FOR THE TIME BEING THE MANAGER IS STICKING TO A FOUR MAN ROTATION.

DAVID PRICE WILL GO TONIGHT, STEVEN WRIGHT, RICK PORCELLO AND EDUARDO RODRIGUEZ ARE THE OTHERS.

AS MUCH AS FANS LIKE TO BLAME ONE PITCHER IT’S DEEPER THAN THAT.

THE STARTERS AND BULLPEN ARE NOT DEPENDABLE DAY IN DAY OUT.

THE FATE OF THIS CLUB PROBABLY IS IN THE HANDS OF DAVE DOMBROWSKY THE PRESIDENT OF BASEBALL OPERATIONS.

HIS DECISIONS IN THE NEXT MONTH OR SO WILL SEAL THE FATE OF BOSTON.

AT THE MOMENT THE HITTERS ARE OUTPRODUCING THE PITCHERS WHICH HAS THE TEAM IN FIRST PLACE BY A GAME.

IT HAS MADE FOR EXCITING BASEBALL BUT IT WON’T BE ENOUGH TO SAVE THIS TEAM FROM ITS PITCHING PROBLEMS.

LAS VEGAS STILL HAS THE CUBS FACING THE RED SOX IN THE WORLD SERIES.

NOT SURE I’M READY TO TAKE THAT BET YET.

THIS IS GEORGE HALE WITH MY PERSPECTIVE ON SPORTS.
