George Hale Talks About the Red Hot Sox

IT’S A LONG SEASON BUT, FOR NOW, CALL THEM THE BOSTON RED HOT SOX…

GEORGE HALE’S HERE TO TALK ABOUT IT:

“LIKE MOST FOLKS IN NEW ENGLAND I SPEND A LARGE AMOUNT OF TIME WATCHING RED SOX BASEBALL.

IT MAY NOT BE MY HOBBY BUT IT’S CLOSE TO BEING ONE.

THERE ARE 162 REGULAR SEASON GAMES AND THE ONLY ONES I MISS ARE WHEN THEY ARE ON THE WEST COAST AT NIGHT OR WHEN I’M TRAVELING SOMEWHERE.

AND I’M HERE TO TELL YOU THAT THE LAST COUPLE OF SEASONS HAVE BEEN BRUTAL FOR PEOPLE LIKE ME.

I DON’T NEED TO TELL YOU HOW LONG THE SEASON IS WHEN YOUR TEAM IS IN THE CELLAR AND THE PATSYS OF THE LEAGUE.

NOW, SUDDENLY, OUR HOME TOWN TEAM IS THE HOTTEST THING IN BASEBALL.

YESTERDAY I SAW A FRIEND WHO IS A YANKEE FAN AND WE EXCHANGED OUR USUAL GREETINGS.

I TOLD HIM THE PIN STRIPERS WERE AWFUL AND HE SAID WAIT TILL YOUR TEAM SWOONS.

WHICH BRINGS ME TO THE POINT.

IS THE RED SOX TEAM WE ARE WATCHING RIGHT NOW THE REAL DEAL OR IS HEARTBREAK IN OUR FUTURE?

BOSTON HAS WON FIVE STRAIGHT WHICH IS THEIR LONGEST WIN STREAK OF THE SEASON.

THIS EDITION OF BALL-BASHERS HAVE SCORED DOUBLE-DIGIT RUNS IN FOUR STRAIGHT GAMES.

THE LAST TEAM TO DO THAT WAS THE RED SOX OF 2007.

THE RED SOX HAVE HIT HOME RUNS IN 13 CONSECUTIVE GAMES AND 29 OUT OF THE PARK IN THE LAST 17 GAMES WHICH IS THE MOST IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL.

IT WOULD BE EASY TO SAY THAT BIG PAPI, DAVID ORTIZ, IN HIS FINAL YEAR IS THE REASON THAT THE TEAM IS SURGING.

HOWEVER, IT’S A LOT MORE THAN THAT…A HECK OF A LOT MORE.

PAPI HAS NINE HOMERS BUT DUSTIN PEDROIA, MOOKIE BETTS AND JACKIE BRADLEY, JR HAVE SIX.

IN THE FIRST 35 GAMES OF THE SEASON SIX PLAYERS HAVE HIT AT LEAST FOUR HOMERS.

TO BE HONEST THE BIG QUESTION IS “ARE THE RED SOX FOR REAL” OR IS THIS JUST A SPURT IN A LONG SEASON THAT RUNS THROUGH SEPTEMBER.

IT’S IMPOSSIBLE TO TELL REALLY AND NO ONE CAN PROJECT IF AND WHEN AN INJURY BUG WILL APPEAR.

BUT ONE THING IS APPARENT…THIS TEAM ENJOYS WINNING AND SEEMINGLY THEY ARE ALL TOGEATHER AND HAVING A LOT OF FUN.

BASEBALL IS DIFFERENT THAN OTHER SPORTS.

UNLIKE THE INTENSITY OF FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL, BASEBALL IS BEST PLAYED WHEN THE TEAM IS LOOSE.

THIS SQUAD APPEARS TO BE VERY LOOSE.

BOSTON, LIKE ANY TEAM NEEDS SOLID PITCHING, WHICH HAS BEEN SPOTTY AT TIMES IN THE EARLY GOING.

BUT I TAKE HEART IN WHAT I SAW FROM DAVID PRICE, THE ACE OF THE STAFF, LAST NIGHT.

THE HIGH PRICED AND HIGHLY REGARDED STAR WENT 6 2/3RD INNINGS, WALKED ONE AND STRUCK OUT 12 OPPOSING BATTERS.

AT $217 MILLION OVER SEVEN YEARS THE OWNERS ARE BANKING ON PRICE DELIVERING.

OBVIOUSLY THE SOX NEED THE WHOLE STAFF TO BE SOLID.

THE REJUVINATED STEVEN WRIGHT WITH HIS KNUCKLEBALL FLUTTERING WILL GET THE NOD TONIGHT.

HE HAS BEEN TREMENDOUS THUS FAR.

I KNOW SOME FANS ARE SAYING WHAT ABOUT BUCHHOLTZ WHO GOES HOT AND COLD.

WITH FINGERS CROSSED I STILL THINK HE WILL COME AROUND OVER THE LONG HAUL.

OK I REALIZE THAT I AM BEING GIDDY AT THIS POINT WITH A VERY LONG WAY TO GO.

BUT AT THIS POINT IN THE SEASON THE LAST 19 GAMES HAVE BEEN BRILLIANT.

FROM A 7 WIN 8 LOSS BEGINNING THE SOX ARE NOW 22-13 AND IN A VIRTUAL TIE FOR FIRST PLACE IN THE AMERICAN LEAGUE EAST.

I’M WILLING TO CONCEDE THAT A BUNCH OF WINS HAVE COME AGAINST TEAMS THAT ARE IN OR NEAR LAST PLACE.

ON THE OTHER SIDE BOSTON WENT TO CHICAGO AND TOOK TWO OF THREE FROM THE WHITE SOX.

SO I’M NOT 100 PERCENT SURE THAT IN SEPTEMBER THE BOSOX WILL BE GETTING READY FOR POST SEASON.

WHAT I AM SURE OF IS THAT AS OF RIGHT NOW I’M HAVING A LOT OF FUN FOLLOWING THE TEAM AND FROM ALL EVIDENCE THE RED SOX PLAYERS ARE HAVING A LOT OF
FUN BEATING THE TAR OUT OF THE OPPOSING TEAMS.

AND THE YANKEES ARE IN LAST PLACE.

SWEET!

THIS IS GEORGE HALE AND THAT’S MY PERSPECTIVE ON SPORTS.”
