Kids in Brewer had a sweet summer day, but it wasn’t just because of the free ice cream.
Literacy Volunteers of Bangor partnered up with Darling’s Ice Cream for a Cause to pass out free books.
The Norumbega Park community was packed with children picking out new summer reads.
Organizers say two thirds of low income families don’t have books in their home.
They also want to encourage families to stress the importance of reading in the summer.
“It’s so exciting to combine the idea of something so important as literacy and getting books in the hands of kids with something really fun like ice cream and having it be a special treat associating books and learning with having a great time,” said Literacy Volunteers of Bangor Service Coordinator Meredith Eaton.
“I’m just excited to read it,” said Lilah referring to her new book.

The bookmobile will be making its way to surrounding communities in the Greater Bangor area this summer.
