A man from Bangor accused of attacking a pregnant woman and leaving her with serious head injuries remains in jail on $100,000 bail.
Prosecutors are also asking for a competency exam for 34-year-old Joshua Cole.
Police say he has a mental illness and was being treated for it.
Cole’s charged with elevated aggravated assault and two other assault charges.
Police say he also went after two people who tried to stop the attack.
Prosecutors say since the alleged attack early Monday morning, the woman has been moved to a hospital in Boston, undergone surgeries and may lose her eyesight.
We’re told the baby was not injured.
Police say they were called to an apartment on Essex Street for a report of a family fight.
We’re told Cole and the woman had been living together for about a month.
Police say Cole refused to come out of his apartment.
A special response team was called in and when Cole opened the door, an officer used a taser to subdue him.
Prosecutors say Cole made bizarre statements to police when they interviewed him, leading them to find out about his mental illness diagnosis.
A hearing regarding a competency exam could take place as soon as Friday.
