Thousands joined the fight against cancer Saturday in Brewer.

The EMMC Foundation Champion the Cure Challenge raised more than $500,000. Walkers, runners, bikers and countless volunteers made the fight against deadly cancers possible. Funds will go to make cancer clinics better for Mainers.

The hospital is also working on a unique project– they’re compiling a cancerous tissues depository to help researchers study the causes of cancer.

“When I tell people outside of Bangor what we have here, they can’t believe it they think this is just awesome I think it’s really exceptional and we’re really really appreciative,” says Thomas Openshaw, Head Onocology Researcher for EMMC Cancer Care.

“It doesn’t seem like there’s a lot of competition like there is with a usual road race everyone cheering each other on it’s just a great great environment,” says Robin Ogden, a participant.

People were able to join the National Marrow Donor Program with just a simple swab of the mouth.
