Some businesses in Brewer were evacuated Wednesday, and a busy street was shut down for a period of time while officials investigated a natural gas leak.

It happened just before 1pm.

Brewer Fire and Police Departments responded to an area behind Tradewinds Car Wash on Wilson Street.

Police tell us there was an individual digging holes for fence posts when the leak happened.

“They struck a live gas line and a fairly severe leak resulted from that. We subsequently ended up shutting down traffic from the Green Point Road to Parkway South just as a precaution until Bangor Gas officials could get here to repair it,” said Deputy Chief Jason Moffitt.

Police tell us businesses in that closed off section were evacuated.

The street has since reopened, and folks were able to return to work.

We’re told Bangor Gas responded quickly to fix the gas line.
