Former Howland Police Chief Enters Not Guilty Plea to Sex Charges 

A former Howland police chief accused of assaulting five-year-old twin girls entered a not guilty plea Monday.

Charges against 72-year-old Carl Smith of Eddington include gross sexual assault and unlawful sexual contact.

Court documents say Smith babysat the girls.

The girls reportedly spent a weekend alone with smith in late April.

School officials learned about the possible sexual abuse and called police.

Smith was in police work for 18 years, 13 of them as Howland’s police chief.

He is being held on $100,000 bail.
