George Hale with Some Advice for Young Athletes

Updated 4 months ago

GEORGE HALE TALK SPORTS: THIS TIME , SOME ADVICE FOR YOUNG ATHLETES, AND THEIR PARENTS….

THE LOCAL JOKE ALWAYS IS “THE BANGOR FAIR IS GONE” IT’S TIME TO BANK THE HOUSE.

WELL, NOT QUITE, BUT SUMMER IS REALLY MOVING ALONG.

NOT SURPRISINGLY A LOT OF ATTENTION IS TURNING TO THE NEXT BIG SEASON WHICH IS FOOTBALL AND THE OTHER FALL SPORTS.

NOW I’M THE LAST PERSON ON THE PLANET TO DISCOURAGE YOUNG PEOPLE FROM PLAYING SPORTS.

IN FACT, WE WOULD BE BETTER OFF IF MORE COMPUTERS, IPADS, IPODS AND CELLPHONES WERE TURNED OFF AND THERE WAS MORE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY.

BUT AT THE SAME TIME AS THE FALL SEASON IS ON THE HORIZON SOME CONSIDERATION SHOULD BE GIVEN TO JUST BEING KIDS AND ENJOYING THE SUMMER BREAK.

WE HAVE GOTTEN TO THE POINT WHERE WE ARE SUCH A SPECIALIZED SOCIETY THAT FAR TOO MANY YOUNGSTERS ARE INVOLVED IN SOME KIND OF COMPETITION ALL YEAR LONG.

IT’S NOT ALL BAD BUT THERE SHOULD BE TIME FOR OTHER THINGS TOO.

SOME KIDS SIMPLY PLAY THE SAME SPORT ALL YEAR LONG IN ONE FORM OR ANOTHER.

TOO MANY PROGRAMS, IN MY OPINION, WITH TRAVEL TEAMS AND SUCH TAKE SO MUCH TIME THAT THE ATHLETE REALLY DOESN’T HAVE TIME TO RECOVER AND RELAX.

WE ALL KNOW, OR SHOULD KNOW, THAT A VERY SMALL PERCENT WILL GO ON TO PLAY COLLEGE SPORTS AND LESS THAN ONE PERCENT WILL BECOME PROS.

I’VE BEEN LOOKING AT THESE TRENDS FOR A LONG TIME AND THE STATISTICS ARE STAGGERING.

EVERY YEAR MORE THAN 3-AND-A-HALF-MILLION CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 15 REQUIRE MEDICAL TREATMENT FOR SPORTS INJURIES.

THERE HAS BEEN A 5 TO 7 FOLD INCREASE IN SPORTS INJURIES IN THE LAST FEW DECADES.

THE BASIC IDEA IS TO KEEP YOUNG PLAYERS ON THE FIELD AND OUT OF THE OPERATING ROOMS.

OTHOPEDIC DOCTORS ARE SEEING TOO MANY CASES OF ACL AND LCL DAMAGES IN BOTH GIRLS AND BOYS.

MANY INJURIES COME BECAUSE OF OVERUSE…PLAIN AND SIMPLE.

YOU NAME A PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE, IN ANY SPORT, AND THERE IS ONE THING THEY HAVE IN COMMON…THEY HAVE A BREAK.

WE CALL IT THE OFF SEASON.

THEY REST THEIR BODIES AND MINDS AND SPEND TIME WITH FAMILY.

MAYBE IT’S GOLF, BOATING, SKIING OR WHATEVER BUT IT GETS THEM AWAY FROM THE GRIND OF PRACTICE AND PLAYING.

NOW THIS ISN’T A RANT AGAINST SUMMER PROGRAMS.

MOST ARE VERY GOOD AND WELL RUN.

THEY CAN BE IMPORTANT WHEN PART OF AN ORGANIZED PLAN FOR THE YEAR.

ON THE OTHER HAND THE CAMPS SHOULDN’T BE THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE SUMMER EITHER.

ALL ATHLETES ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL.

SOME PARENTS HAVE A REAL PROBLEM WITH THE FACT THAT THEIR ATHLETE IS NOT GOING TO BE THE NEXT SUPER STAR.

WHEN ALL IS SAID AND DONE THE EXPERIENCES OF PLAYING ON TEAMS AND IN GAMES SHOULD BE A PLEASANT MEMORY AND NOT SOMETHING THAT BECAME A TASK TO DREAD.

THE ULTIMATE GOAL AT THE END OF THE HIGHWAY SHOULD BE TO PROMOTE LIFELONG PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND GOOD SKILLS.

IF THE AIM IS TO PRODUCE HIGHLY SKILLED COLLEGE AND PROFESSIONAL PLAYERS WE WILL COME UP EXTREMELY SHORT.

ONLY A TINY FEW, NO MATTER THE SPORT, ACHIEVE THE NEXT LEVEL.

OUT OF 1,000 HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES ONLY ABOUT TWO WILL GET A PRO CHANCE AND ONLY A SMALL PERCENTAGE OF THOSE ACTUALLY SUCCEED.

SO AS THE SUMMER SEASON IS HEADING TOWARD LABOR DAY IT’S TIME TO TAKE STOCK.

SOON KIDS WILL BE HEADING BACK TO THE PLAYING FIELDS, WEIGHED DOWN WITH EQUIPMENT, WATER BOTTLES AND PARENTS CLOSE BEHIND.

HOPEFULLY THEY HAD A GOOD TIME THIS SUMMER WITH SOME TRAVELING, SPLISHING AND SPLASHING AND AWAY FROM FORMAL SCHEDULES.

AFTER YEARS OF BEING AROUND TEAMS AND VARIOUS SPORTS PEOPLE OFTEN ASK ME WHAT I MIGHT SUGGEST OR RECOMMEND FOR THEIR CHILD.

DOCTORS ARE GOOD AT PUTTING THINGS BACK TOGETHER BUT THE GOAL SHOULD ALWAYS BE TO PREVENT THE INJURY IN THE FIRST PLACE.

THERE ARE A LOT OF ANSWERS BUT ONE THING PARENTS SHOULD ALWAYS ASK OF THEIR CHILDREN WHO PLAY IN COMPETITIVE GAMES.

SIMPLY PUT IT’S ARE YOU HAVING FUN?

THERE IS A VERY BIG PICTURE THAT GOES WAY BEYOND “FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS.”

THIS IS GEORGE HALE WITH MY PERSPECTIVE ON SPORTS.
