That’s how many are still needed for the “We’ve Got Your Back” backpack drive.
Penquis has 1200 kids registered in need of them.
School supplies for kids aren’t cheap, and organizers hope this will take some weight off of parents’ backs financially.
“We’ve had parents say this backpack will be the only new thing that their child is going to have to go to school. Today parents are just saying how much this eases the burden for them financially and allows them to buy other things like the shoes they’ve grown out of. It means a lot not only to the kids, but the parents themselves,” said Renae Muscatell, Community Relations Manager for Penquis.
To help with the drive you can donate online at penquis.org, or you can drop off a bag at Penquis (262 Harlow St, Bangor). They are accepting donations until August 15th
And, Monday, August 11th from 4pm to close, the Mexican restaurant Miquel’s in Bangor is giving 10 percent of all sales to the program. Back packs can be dropped off there during that time too.
