Supporters of a popular educator in Orono sat in silent protest at Tuesday’s school board meeting.
Waldo Caballero is the orchestra director for grades K – 12.
Recently he received notice from the superintendent’s office he would not be able to teach this upcoming school year because he’s two points shy of meeting requirements on a state certification exam.
According to his wife, the superintendent’s office set an August deadline to get the points.
Supporters are hoping for an extension.
They’ve lobbied their case through emails, letters, and phone calls to the superintendent’s office.
Public input, during meetings like this, does not allow comments related to personnel.
At a meeting last month, the board chair closed public comment altogether because he said the district could end up in legal hot water for discussing employees in a public setting.
A concerned parent, Sandy Cyrus, said, “We are concerned and there are a lot of us and we will continue to petition them to hire Waldo Caballero for the next school year.”
School board members offered no comment on the issue at Tuesday’s meeting.
Caballero is also the boy’s varsity soccer coach and has been re-nominated to coach.
The superintendent says the orchestra and soccer programs will continue.
