Momentous Day on Monhegan Marks 400th Anniversary

It’s a momentous day on Monhegan.

A celebration is taking place for the 400th anniversary of Captain John Smith’s landing on the island.

His visit in 1614 transitioned the island into a year-round settlement.

Wednesday, a parade through town marked the quadricentennial.

Senators Susan Collins and Angus King were on hand, as was Congresswoman Chellie Pingree.

The celebration caps off Wednesday night with fireworks.
