Maine, Feds Working On Plan For Trapped Lynx

Updated 5 months ago

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Maine officials are working with the federal government to craft a plan to manage the impact of animal trapping programs on the Canada lynx.

The Canada lynx is protected under the federal Endangered Species Act, but is sometimes incidentally caught via recreational fur trapping and predator management programs.

The state says 84 lynx were reported incidentally trapped in Maine from 1999 to 2013. State officials say seven of the lynx died, but most were released with no injuries or minor injuries.

Maine officials are applying to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for an incidental take permit for the species. The state is required to put forth a plan of what steps it will take to minimize the impact of trapping on lynx.
