George Hale Talks about the Red Sox

Updated 5 months ago

BESIDES BUCHHOLZ, PEDROIA, NAPOLI, KOJI AND ORTIZ…WHO’S LEFT?

THAT’S WHAT RED SOX FANS ARE WONDERING ….

GEORGE:

I WAS GOING TO TALK ABOUT A DIFFERENT SUBJECT TONIGHT BUT AFTER THE TSUNAMI THAT HIT BOSTON YESTERDAY I CHANGED GEARS.

IN THE SPACE OF FOUR HOURS, IN A FLURRY OF MOVES, THE FACE OF THE RED SOX CHANGED DRAMATICALLY.

FOR MOST NEW ENGLAND FANS THE MOVES WERE HARD TO WRAP THEIR HEAD AROUND.

AFTER ALL THIS IS THE TEAM THAT WENT LAST TO FIRST AND SUDDENLY LAST AGAIN.

THE NAMES ARE WRITTEN IN RED SOX GLORY AND HISTORY.

SUDDENLY GONE: LESTER, LACKEY, GOMES AND DREW.

IN ALL SEVEN PLAYERS HIT THE ROAD TO NEW VENUES.

MUCH OF THE SPECULATION LEADING UP TO THE NON-WAVER TRADE DEADLINE SURROUNDED JON LESTER.

HE DID THE RIGHT THINGS, SAID THE RIGHT THINGS BUT IN THE END WENT TO THE OAKLAND A’S FOR SLUGGER YEONIS CESPEDES.

SOCIAL MEDIA LIT UP LIKE A CHRISTMAS TREE.

HOW COULD MANAGEMENT TURN THEIR BACK ON LESTER WHO BATTLED THROUGH CANCER AND WORE A WORLD SERIES RING AND WHO HAS NEVER WORN ANY OTHER UNIFORM BUT BOSTON?

SURE THE RED SOX ARE A BAD BALL CLUB AT THE MOMENT BUT THERE’S ALWAYS HOPE.

LESTER NEVER BACKED OFF.

HE’S TOUGH IF NOT DOWNRIGHT NASTY ON THE MOUND AND A WINNER IN ALL RESPECTS.

HIS WORLD SERIES PERFORMANCES WERE DOMINATING.

BUT IN A FLASH HE’S GONE.

DID HE DESERVE BETTER?

OF COURSE HE DID BUT THIS IS NOT A WALL STREET FIRM OR SOME LARGE COMPANY THAT REWARDS LOYALTY AND LONGEVITY.

THIS IS BASEBALL AND IT’S DIFFERENT.

THERE ARE AGENTS AND CONTRACTS.

PROFESSIONAL SPORTS IS A BUSINESS FIRST AND SPORTS SECOND.

YES THERE IS A DEGREE OF LOYALTY AND SENTIMENTALITY BUT MOSTLY IT COMES FROM THE FANS.

RICH GUYS, WHO ARE SUCCESSFUL, OWN TEAMS THESE DAYS AND THE BOTTOM LINE IS PROFIT.

HOPEFULLY ALONG THE WAY YOU CAN WIN ALSO.

LESTER HAD A PROBLEM AND THE RED SOX RECOGNIZED IT.

HE WAS STARTING TO AGE.

HIS NEXT BIRTHDAY CAKE HAS 31 CANDLES AND IT WAS GOING TO TAKE A 5 YEAR DEAL AND MAYBE 125 MILLION DOLLARS TO HAVE HIM FINISH IN BEANTOWN.

PITCHERS ARE ALWAYS ONE THROW AWAY FROM DISASTER.

BECAUSE OF WHAT THEY DO THE SPECTER OF INJURY IS ALWAYS THERE AND THE OLDER YOU GET THE CHANCES INCREASE.

SO A LONG TERM DEAL IS NOT AN OPTION IF YOU ARE THE G-M.

AND THE RED SOX MADE IT CLEAR RIGHT FROM THE START OF THE SEASON WITH A LOW BALL OFFER TO THEIR ACE.

HERE’S A LITTLE BIT OF REALITY.

MOST, NOT ALL, SUPERSTARS OF THE GAME ARE WEARING A DIFFERENT UNIFORM AT THE END OF THEIR CAREERS.

FANS HAVE TO REALIZE THAT AT ITS CORE BASEBALL, FOOTBALL, THE NBA AND ALL OF THEM ARE HARD CORE BUSINESSES.

THE OLD TIME OWNERS HAVE LONG DEPARTED THE SCENE.

SO AS PAINFUL AS THIS WHOLE SEASON HAS BECOME RED SOX NATION IN ONE FATEFUL AFTERNOON LEARNED A LESSON.

THE TEAM WAS LOSING, EVEN WITH LESTER AND LACKEY, AND DROPPING IN VALUE.

LIKE IN “THE GOD FATHER” IT WAS JUST BUSINESS.

THERE HAVE BEEN WORSE SITUATIONS IN BASEBALL BEFORE.

THE A’S ARE A MUCH BETTER TEAM NOW BUT IN 1976 CHARLIE FINLEY SOLD OFF PLAYERS TO PAY HIS DEBTS.

PERSONALLY I’M HAPPY FOR LESTER WHO NOW HAS A LEGIT CHANCE TO PLAY IN THE WORLD SERIES THIS YEAR.

AND NO I DON’T THINK HE WILL RESIGN WITH BOSTON AT THE END OF THE YEAR BECAUSE THAT SHIP HAS SAILED.

ARE THE RED SOX A BETTER TEAM NOW?

NO…BUT MAYBE IN THE FUTURE.

ALL I KNOW IS THAT ANYTIME I’VE BEEN TOLD THAT SOMETHING THAT WAS HAPPENING TO ME WAS A “BUSINESS DECISION” I KNEW WAS GETTING SCREWED.

SO DOES JON LESTER BUT HE HANDLED IT WITH CLASS.

THIS IS GEORGE HALE WITH MY PERSPECTIVE ON SPORTS.
