The owners of a landmark Machias Restaurant are ready to rebuild, just weeks after the eatery was destroyed by flames.

The town’s planning board unanimously approved a permit Monday that paves the way for Helen’s Restaurant to break ground.

The owners, David and Julie Barker, plan to build on the same site next to Route 1.

They say it could take up to 6 months before they’re serving food, and of course their famous pies, again.

The Barkers estimate the slightly re-designed new building will cost upwards of $1,000,000

On the morning of June 11th, flames tore through the original building.

The Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office isn’t sure what sparked it.

Since then, locals began several fundraising campaigns to be benefit employees.

About 50 people worked at Helen’s.

Nearly $30,000 has been collected so far.
