People in Down East Maine did some off-roading for a good cause today. The Mackenzie Gray Memorial ATV Ride wound its way from Cherryfield to Machias and back. The ride was organized by the family of 4-year-old Mackenzie Gray, who was killed in a car accident four years ago. About 30 people hopped on their ATVs for the 50-mile trek. Proceeds will help pay for swimming lessons and summer camp for local children–and participants say that helps keep Mackenzie’s memory alive. “So we organized this memorial ride in her memory. She loved to four-wheel. Matter of fact the picture is of her. And she liked to go swimming and camping and all of that stuff,” said Juanita Gray, Mackenzie’s grandmother. “This is actually a celebration of her life, because these are really things that she enjoyed to do, and it’s a good cause, and it gives us a chance to raise money for other kids to do the things that she’s not going to be able to do,” said Mackenzie’s aunt Alice Grindle. The ride is now in its third year.
