A convicted robber from Bangor is now accused of stealing a money donation box for the Hermon Food pantry.

49-year-old James Hayes is facing theft charges. He’s also accused of violating his probation.

The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office asked for the public’s help Thursday to identify the people caught on camera at the C and K Variety on Billings Road in Hermon last month.

Authorities say shortly after the story aired on TV, several calls came in from the public and pointed deputies in the direction of Hayes.

We’re told the second person in the video was not involved in the crime.

Hayes turned himself in Friday morning.

Hayes served five years in prison for a robbery in 2007.

His sentence included three years of probation.
