Alert Neighbor Leads To Arrest Of Alleged Waterville Copper Thieves

An attentive neighbor and quick police work led to the arrest of two men police say were stealing copper from a vacant house late last night.

Police arrested Kevin Hubert, 32, and Sean Rancourt, 29.

They’re both charged with burglary, aggravated criminal mischief and other charges. Police say a neighbor saw lights and movement in the house on Summer Street in Waterville’s South End and called police. Police found Hubert and Rancourt hiding inside the house and arrested them both.

“Luckily for us the scene had a wealth of physical evidence that allowed us to kind of tell the story about what happened inside there. There were cutting tools, there was a large amount of copper that had already been cut away from the basement and up in the rafters and had been set aside in preparation for being carried out of there,” said Waterville Police Department Deputy Chief Charles Rumsey.

Both men are being held at the Kennebec County Jail.
