Rainy & Windy Early, Arthur Moves Northeast

Arthur will be moving northeast into the Eastern Gulf of Maine and by latemorning today,  It will be located either over the Bay of Fundy or western Nova Scotia. Moisture associated with the hurricane will bring periods of heavy rain to especially eastern parts of Maine this morning as the hurricane continues to ride north just to the east of New England Coastline. The exact track of the storm will determine how much rain and wind Maine sees from the hurricane, with much of the state likely picking up 1 to 4” of rain by the time the rain tapers off later today, with the heaviest rain falling over easternmost parts of the state. The expected current track of the storm would keep the very strong near hurricane force winds well offshore as the storm lifts up to our east, but the wind along the coastline could still gust to near 50mph, with inland locals seeing gusts as high as 40mph. The track of the storm will bring large swells and very dangerous rip currents to our coastline today, so it is best to stay out of the ocean. Once again the expected heavy rain could lead to localized flash flooding especially over eastern parts of the state as we begin the weekend.

Cooler, drier and less humid air will filter into Maine on a northwest breeze once the hurricane moves off to our northeast later in the day Saturday. High pressure approaching the Northeast from the west will bring partly to mostly sunny skies and pleasant temps to all of New England Sunday. A southwest breeze on Monday will allow the humid air to begin to push back into Maine during the day and an approaching cold front could kick off a few scattered thundershowers towards evening.
