Stealthy Warship Zumwalt Is Soon Getting Jet Fuel

BATH, Maine (AP) — Bath Iron Works is getting ready to bring fuel aboard the Navy’s biggest destroyer in preparation for lighting off some of the world’s largest marine turbines.

The grunt for generators that produce power for the all-electric Zumwalt will come from a pair of Rolls-Royce jet turbines similar to those used in the Boeing 777.

Shipbuilders will be working in the coming weeks to bring JP-5 military-grade jet fuel aboard and flush the systems before activating the turbines for the first time this summer.

Shipyard spokesman Jim DeMartini says workers are proceeding in a “deliberate and painstakingly accurate and detailed way.”
