New federal funds will let Bangor test properties for contamination.
Developers are often hesitant to do work in older areas of the city because of the costly testing process. City officials say they’ll look to use the $400,000 grant from the EPA on older properties that have been vacant for long periods.
Similar funds have been used in Bangor in the past, to test the waterfront and other properties.
Unknown environmental issues are always a hurdle to developers because you can spend fifty thousand dollars, sixty thousand dollars, to test a property before you can even determine if it’s viable to develop and a lot of people are skittish to do that,” says Jason Bird, Economic Development Officer.
Bangor may begin testing areas as early as July 1st.
