George Hale Talks Red Sox

GEORGE HALE  TALK SOX:

OX DID SOMETHING IMPORTANT YESTERDAY.

AMID THE NEWS FROM THE WORLD CUP IN BRAZIL AND THE U-S OPEN AT PINEHURST OUR HOME TOWN HEROES WON A GAME.

THIS SEASON HAS BEEN A ROLLER COASTER RIDE WITH A SHOCKING TEN GAME LOSING STREAK FOLLOWED BY A SEVEN GAME WIN STREAK AND THEN AROUND THE CURVE AND
DOWNHILL AGAIN.

BOSTON IS SIX GAMES BELOW .500 AND IN NEXT TO LAST PLACE.

JUST ABOUT EIGHT MONTHS AGO THE SOX WON THE WORLD SERIES.

IT WASN’T EXPECTED BUT THEY DID.

THIS YEAR FANS WANT A REPEAT BUT SO FAR IT’S NOT HAPPENING…AND RARELY HAS A TEAM HAS GONE FROM LAST TO FIRST AND BACK TO NEAR LAST IN A SUCH SHORT
PERIOD OF TIME.

PURE AND SIMPLE, AS PART OF RED SOX NATION, WE ARE SPOILED—2004 TOOK CARE OF THAT.

THE BOSOX CAUGHT THE BRASS RING AND WON IT ALL AND THEN REPEATED IN 2007 AND AGAIN LAST YEAR.

NOW WE WANT IT EVERY YEAR EVEN THOUGH IN BASEBALL THAT’S VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE.

SO WITH SOME OF THE PLAYERS GONE AND NEWCOMERS ON BOARD WE ARE NO LONGER THRILLED UNLESS WE ARE IN FIRST PLACE.

I’VE OFTEN COMPARED THIS TO FISHING.

IF YOU WERE SURE YOU WOULD CATCH A BIG LUNKER EVERYTIME IT WOULD BECOME BORING AFTER A WHILE.

YOU CAN NEVER TAKE WINNING FOR GRANTED IN LIFE OR IN SPORTS.

THE RED SOX OFFENSE HAS SADLY BEEN MISSING FOR MUCH OF THE YEAR BUT THERE ARE BRIGHT SPOTS.

JUST NOT ENOUGH OF THEM SO FAR.

THROUGH THE YEARS WE HAVE BECOME USED TO SOX TEAMS SCORING 8-9 OR TEN RUNS IN WINNING GAMES.

THIS SEASON BOSTON HAS PLAYED LIKE A NATIONAL LEAGUE TEAM ONLY THEY AREN’T VERY GOOD AT IT.

THERE WAS A POINT IN THIS SLIDE THAT BOSTON ONLY SCORED ONE RUN IN 27 INNINGS.

ONLY BIG PAPI IS STILL FEARED BY OPPOSING PITCHERS IN THE LINEUP AND TERRY FRANCONA OF ALL PEOPLE FORGOT THAT LAST NIGHT IN THE SOX 5-2 WIN OVER CLEVELAND.

BUT BACK TO MY POINT…AS PART OF RED SOX NATION WE OFTEN PLACE TOO MANY DESIGNS ON OUR TEAM SINCE THE CURSE WAS BROKEN IN 2004.

LOSING ISN’T AN OPTION ANY MORE FOR MOST FAITHFUL.

WELL, IF YOU LOOK AT THE STATS IT’S NEVER EASY TO REPEAT CHAMPIONSHIPS.

I TALK TO FANS WHO ARE FURIOUS AT THE TEAM’S RECORD.

MY RESPONSE IS SIMPLY THAT A LOT HAS HAPPENED AND THE SEASON IS ONLY 40-PERCENT OVER.

THE RED SOX HAVE BEEN A MONSTER TEAM IN THE RECENT BASEBALL HISTORY.

THEY’VE SPENT MONEY AND MADE TRADES AND SOME MISTAKES.

BUT THAT’S NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR SOME FANS.

SURE THE NUMBERS ARE NOT GREAT.

IN THE LAST TEN GAMES BOSTON IS 3-7.

THEY ARE CURRENTLY BEHIND TORONTO BY EIGHT GAMES.

BUT THE REST OF THE AMERICAN LEAGUE EAST, EXCEPT FOR TORONTO, ARE NOT EXACTLY TEARING UP THE PEA PATCH EITHER.

BALTIMORE AND NEW YORK ARE THREE AND A HALF BACK AND TAMPA BAY IS THIRTEEN AND A HALF BACK.

SO ANOTHER WIN STREAK WILL CHANGE THE LANDSCAPE QUICKLY.

IT MAY BE TIME FOR RED SOX FANS TO TAKE STOCK AND COUNT OUR BLESSINGS.

THERE ARE SOME GOOD YOUNG PLAYERS IN THE LINEUP BUT IT TAKES TIME.

WINNING IS GREAT BUT IT SHOULDN’T CONSUME OUR ENTHUSIAM FOR THE GAME.

PERSONALLY I’M THRILLED WHEN THE TEAM DOES GREAT, WINS A CHAMPIONSHIP.

BUT I’M NOT DEPRESSED WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH.

I HAVE A FRIEND WHO IS A LIFELONG CHICAGO CUBS FAN.

EVERY YEAR HE STARTS THE SEASON HOPING AGAINST HOPE THAT THE CUBBIES GET INTO THE WORLD SERIES JUST ONCE IN HIS LIFETIME.

NOW THAT’S SOMETHING THAT IS DEPRESSING.

THIS IS GEORGE HALE WITH MY PERSPECTIVE ON SPORTS.
