George Hale Talks about America’s Favorite Pastime

Updated 5 months ago

IT’S AMERICA’S FAVORITE PASTIME….AND OVER THE YEARS, SOME ANIMOSITY HAS BEEN ADDED TO JUST PLAYING BALL.

GEORGE HALE TALKS ABOUT IT:

IT’S NO SECRET THAT BOSTON RED SOX PLAYERS AND THE TAMPA BAY RAYS PLAYERS
DON’T LIKE EACH OTHER.

I DON’T THINK IT REPLACES THE RIVALRY WITH THE NY YANKEES BUT AS OF THE MOMENT
THE ANIMOSITY IS THICK.

I WON’T GO THROUGH ALL OF THE RECENT BEAN BALL AND BASE RUNNING INCIDENTS
THAT HAVE HAPPENED LEADING TO FINES AND SUSPENSIONS.

THIS SEASON ITS BEEN A CASE OF SINGING:
“TAKE ME OUT TO THE BRAWL GAME”

ALL OF THIS SCHOOLYARD STUFF GOT ME THINKING ABOUT BASEBALL UNWRITTEN RULES
AND WHY MOST OF THEM ARE STUPID.

I’M SURE YOU HAVE YOURS BUT I CAME UP WITH A COUPLE THAT HAVE EVOLVED THRU
THE YEARS AND MAKE NO SENSE TO ME.

THE DAVID PRICE VS. BIG PAPI AFFAIR STARTED LAST YEAR WHEN ORTIZ HIT TWO HOME
RUNS OFF HIM AND “INSULTED” PRICE MY ADMIRING HIS SHOT.

IN THE UNWRITTEN RULES OF BASEBALL DEPARTMENT DAVID ORTIZ BROKE THE LAW BY
PAUSING WHILE THE BALL SAILED OUT OF THE PARK.

SO PRICE HAD TO GET EVEN.

BUT IT DOESN’T END THERE.

THE RED SOX ARE JUST AS GUILTY.

AT TROPICANA BOSTON TRAILING BY FIVE RUNS BECAME INSENSED WHEN THE RAYS STOLE
THIRD BASE LATE IN THE GAME. NOT NICE TO DO.

I’M NOT SURE HOW BIG A LEAD YOU NEED TO INVOKE THIS CRAZY UNWRITTEN RULE .
IS IT FIVE, EIGHT, TEN RUNS . AFTER ALL YOU CAN ALWAYS THROW THE RUNNER OUT.
BASEBALL IS A GAME THAT KIDS PLAY NATURALLY.

DADS CAN’T WAIT UNTIL A YOUNGSTER IS OLD ENOUGH TO PLAY CATCH WITH HIM.
IF THERE IS ONE GAME THAT A FAMILY CAN PLAY TOGETHER IT’S BASEBALL OR ITS
VARIATIONS LIKE WIFFLE BALL OR SOFTBALL.

I CAN’T REMEMBER A SUMMER IN MY LIFE THAT BASEBALL WASN’T A PART OF IT.
WE MADE UP TEAMS, DIDN’T HAVE UMPIRES AND RARELY GOT INTO A FIGHT.
I CAN’T FIGURE OUT WHY GROWN MEN, MAKING MILLIONS, TRY TO SCREW IT
UP WITH SILLY SUPERSTITIONS.

AS A BROADCASTER I WAS WARNED NEVER TO MENTION THAT A NO HITTER IS IN
PROGRESS. THIS IS SO LAME AS TO DEFY LOGIC. WHAT ALIEN FORCE IS GOING TO COME
DOWN AND RUIN THE GAME IF I DO.

YES AND PLAYERS WON’T SIT NEAR THE PITCHER IN THE DUGOUT
AS FOR PLAYERS, GOD FORBID THAT THEY EVER BUNT TO BREAK UP A NO HITTER. THAT’S
WILL NOT BE TOLERATED AND YOU WILL BE CALLED “BUSH LEAGUE”.

EVEN THOUGH BUNTING IS A FINE ART IN THE SPORT.
BASEBALL FIGHTS ARE REALLY DIFFERENT.

IF TROUBLE BREAKS OUT ON THE FIELD YOU ARE REQUIRED, BY UNWRITTEN RULE, THE JOIN
IN THE FIGHT. MOST EVERYBODY, INCLUDING THE FAR AWAY BULL PENS, RUN ON THE FIELD
AND PUSH AND HUG AND GENERALLY DO NO DAMAGE.
HOCKEY PLAYERS AND FANS LAUGH LOUDLY AT THESE FAUX FIGHTS.
THERE ARE SO MANY OF THESE “RULES” I COULD BE HERE ALL NIGHT
WHO EVER HEARD OF NOT “RUNNING UP THE SCORE” IN A PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL GAME
WHEN THE VERY OBJECT OF THE GAME IS TO SCORE RUNS.

IF MY TEAMMATE IS HIT BY A PITCH THEN AS A PITCHER, I AM OBLIGATED TO THROW AT
AN OPPOSING BATTER, EVEN THOUGH I DON’T REALLY KNOW IF IT WAS INTENTIONAL.
BUT IT’S RIGHT THERE IN THE “UNWRITTEN RULE BOOK”.

IF AS A BASE RUNNER YOU ATTEMPT TO STEAL THIRD WITH TWO OUTS AND FAIL THEN
YOU ARE GOING TO PAY A PRICE IN YOUR CLUBHOUSE.

BUT HERE IS MY FAVORITE.

MANY FANS DON’T KNOW ABOUT THIS UNWRITTEN RULE.

POSITION PLAYERS, WHEN CROSSING THE DIAMOND HEADING TO THE DUGOUT, ARE
NEVER EVER SUPPOSED TO STEP ON THE PITCHERS MOUND. YES WE HAVE HAD FIGHTS
OVER THIS ONE.

OF COURSE YOU CAN NEVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES RUB THE SPOT WHERE
YOU GET HIT

I MAY BE WRONG BUT GETTING HIT WITH A 90 PLUS FAST BALL MUST HURT A LITTLE BIT.
I LOVE BASEBALL BUT SOME OF IT IS SILLY.

THE SANDLOT KIDS HAVE A BETTER HANDLE ON THINGS THAN THE PROS.
