Moms Can Stay Fit at Bangor Hospital

Kids and spouses everywhere will soon celebrate their moms. But moms don’t typically celebrate themselves.

“We tend to lose ourselves,” says Debi Mccann, of Eastern Maine Medical Center.

That was true for mom of two, Heather Spaulding.

“I have spent my entire adult life taking care of my kids,” explains Spaulding.

A Bangor hospital has a new program to help moms reclaim their health and well-being.

“Wellness coaching, an exercise physiologist works with the individual for their exercise routine,” Mccann says.
The program starts by getting moms like Heather here into the gym where they create an individualized workout plan, and it continues here in the kitchen with a consultation and recipe advice with a registered dietitian.

Heather says she now looks at labels differently, and gave her refrigerator a makeover to put healthier foods front and center.

“They adjust it to meet your needs so you don’t feel like you’re failing,” Spaulding said.

Like many moms, Heather has tried plenty of main-stream weight loss programs.

“The difference that I have here, is that I have a coach.”

And it’s not just about tough workouts and proper portion size.

“It’s not about the number on the scale it’s about how you feel physically and mentally.”
“Really is about rediscovering who you are and what it is you want and what it is you need,” Mccann said.
