MOST SPORTS FANS WATCH A LOT OF T-V.

EVEN WHEN THERE ISN’T A GAME TO WATCH.

GEORGE HALE WONDERS ABOUT THAT…

LAST EVENING I HAD A GREAT TIME WATCHING TELEVISION.

THE BRUINS WERE IN MONTREAL AND THE GAME WAS SCORELESS AFTER THREE PERIODS.

IN THE OVERTIME A PLAYER, MATT FRASER, WHO HAD BEEN ON THE TEAM FOR EXACTLY SEVEN HOURS SCORED THE WINNING GOAL TO TIE UP THE SERIES.

IT WAS GREAT THEATER.

NOW IN NEW YORK THERE IS A GREAT THEATER.

IT’S CALLED RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL.

I’VE BEEN THERE MANY TIMES FOR THE CHRISTMAS AND EASTER SHOWS THAT ARE SPECTACULAR.

BUT LAST NIGHT AND FOR THE NEXT TWO DAYS THERE IS A DIFFERENT KIND OF SHOW GOING ON.

IT’S CALLED THE ANNUAL N F L DRAFT.

THEY DON’T CHARGE TO GET IN AND THE CROWD, MOSTLY YOUNG MEN WEARING TEAM COLORS, HOOT AND HOLLER, CHEER AND BOO AS TEAMS SELECT COLLEGE
PLAYERS TO HOPEFULLY PLAY FOR THEIR TEAMS.

AND THE THREE DAY EVENT IS TELEVISED ON ESPN AND THE NFL NETWORK LIVE.

ACROSS THE COUNTRY THERE WILL BE NFL DRAFT PARTIES AND OTHER GATHERINGS OF FOOTBALL FANS.

SO I SUPPOSE IF AMERICANS WILL CELEBRATE CINCO DE MAYO WITH HUGE PARTIES, EVEN WHEN MEXICANS DON’T, THEN THIS EXERCISE MAKES SENSE.

NOW DON’T GET ME WRONG.

I UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF GETTING THE BEST COLLEGE PLAYERS AVAILABLE AND DISTRIBUTING THEM AROUND THE LEAGUE.

HOWEVER, WHEN OFFERED HOUR AFTER HOUR OF COVERAGE OF THE EVENT MY EYES GLAZE OVER.

NOW LET’S BE HONEST…AFTER THE FIRST ROUND IS GONE MOST OF THE VIEWERS HAVE NO IDEA WHO THE PLAYERS ARE ANYWAY.

MOST WILL NEVER SEE THE FIELD OF A NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE STADIUM.

I MEAN, WHO KNOWS THE DEFENSIVE TACKLE FROM MONTANA STATE OTHER THAN MONTANA STATE FANS?

AS BORING AS SOME OF THIS IS THE VIEWING PUBLIC HAS BEEN SUBJECTED TO WEEKS OF MOCK DRAFTS THAT MEAN ZERO LEADING UP TO THE EVENT.

AND WHAT DOES MEL KIPER, JUNIOR DO FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR ANYWAY?

TO BE SURE THERE IS INTEREST IN SOME OF THE BIG NAMES IN THE DRAFT ON OPENING NIGHT.

BUT BY DAY TWO THE STARS ARE GONE.

ONLY 30 PLAYERS ARE INITIALY INVITED TO THE SHOW.

THE NFL HAS THESE DRAFT ROOMS WHERE A CRAZY AMOUNT OF HORSE TRADING GOES ON.

YOU HEAR THINGS LIKE JACKSONVILLE HAS TRADED THEIR PICK OR MAYBE TWO PICKS AND AN UNNAMED PLAYER AND A BAG OF POPCORN FOR SOMEONE.

THE MEDIA HAS TO COME UP WITH SOMETHING EXCITING TO WHILE AWAY THE HOURS WHILE TEAMS ARE ON THE CLOCK AND THEY DID THIS YEAR.

THE ENDLESSLY HYPED SPECTACLE MAY, FOR THE FIRST TIME, HAVE A TEAM DRAFT AN OPENLY GAY PLAYER.

MICHAEL SAM, OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI AND AN ALL-AMERICAN, MADE THE ANNOUNCEMENT IN FEBRUARY.

NOW THE THE NFL HAS NEVER HAD A GAY PLAYER…YEAH, RIGHT.

OF COURSE THEY HAVE BUT IT HASN’T BEEN PUBLICIZED.

THIS GUY WAS DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR IN THE SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE, THE TOUGHEST CONFERENCE IN THE NATION.

BUT, OF COURSE, THERE ARE PLENTY OF WHISPERS IN THE HALL ABOUT WHETHER CLUBS WOULD TAKE A CHANCE.

NFL LOCKEROOMS ARE PRETTY MACHO PLACES.

BY THE WAY HIS COLLEGE TEAMMATES KNEW ALL ABOUT HIS ORIENTATION.

SO THE BIG SHOW IS MOVING TO DAY TWO TONIGHT WITH A WRAP UP COMING ON SATURDAY.

TO BE HONEST MILLIONS OF FANS ARE TUNED IN THIS WEEKEND WITH A BEER IN HAND AND A BRAT ON THE BARBIE.

I CAN’T IMAGINE ANYTHING MORE BORING THAN OR MONOTONOUS THAN TWELVE OR THIRTEEN HOURS OF THIS SOAP OPERA.

ESPECIALLY WHEN I CAN JUST GO TO MY PHONE APP AND SEE WHO GOT DRAFTED ANYWAY.

LET US NOT FORGET THAT TOM BRADY DIDN’T GET PICKED UNTIL THE SIXTH ROUND AND WAS THE 199TH PLAYER SELECTED.

HE GOT ALMOST NO PUBLICITY DURING THE DRAFT.

HOW DID THAT WORK OUT?

THE NEXT TIME I GO TO THE RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL IT WILL BE TO SEE THE ROCKETTES IN ACTION.

NOW THAT’S SOMETHING I CAN GET A “KICK” OUT OF.

THIS IS GEORGE HALE WITH MY PERSPECTIVE ON SPORTS
