IT’S A BIG WEEKEND FOR FOOTBALL FANS…

GEORGE HALE IS HERE WITH HIS TAKE ON WHAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN….

AND NOW WE ARE DOWN TO FOUR TEAMS IN THE N F L.

THE LONG ROAD TO THE SUPERBOWL COMES TO HOPEFULLY AN EXCITING CONCLUSION
ON SUNDAY.
THE PATRIOTS VS THE BRONCOS AND THE 49ERS AT THE SEAHAWKS.
THIS IS MY FAVORITE FOOTBALL WEEKEND OF THE YEAR
SO, LET ME SAY IT AT THE OUTSET.
I GET IT!
PART OF THE ATTRACTION OF THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE IS THAT IT’S FAN
FRIENDLY AND FUN.
THIS IS NOT THE HIGH SCHOOL OR COLLEGE GAME
FANS, FOR THE MOST PART, LIKE PLAYER CELEBRATIONS THAT INCLUDE DANCES,
HOMERUN SWINGS, FIST PUMPS, FIRST DOWN POINTING AND MILITARY SALUTES.
IT GOES ON AND ON.
THE PROBLEM FOR THE N F L IS THAT THE CELEBRATIONS OFTEN COME CLOSE TO
TAUNTING WHICH IS NOT ALLOWED.
A GREEN BAY PACKER JUMPING INTO A CROWD OF CHEESE HEADS IS ONE THING BUT
STICKING YOUR FINGER IN THE FACE OF A DEFENDER IN ANOTHER.
FOR THE OFFICIALS THE TAUNTING CALL IS SUBJECTIVE.
MOST OFTEN YOU SEE IT AFTER A TOUCHDOWN WHEN AN OFFENSIVE PLAYER CROSSES
THE LINE AND DRAWS A FLAG.
THAT WILL COST YOU FIFTEEN YARDS ON THE NEXT KICKOFF
EARLIER THIS SEASON, SEATTLE SEAHAWKS RECIEVER GOLDEN TATE WAS FLAGGED
ON THE 25 YARD LINE FOR TAUNTING DURING A TOUCHDOWN RUN.
THAT ONE COST TATE $7,500 AND A PUBLIC APPOLOGY.
BY THE WAY, IN COLLEGE THE TOUCHDOWN WOULD NOT HAVE COUNTED.
AND IN FACT THE NFL IS LOOKING AT CHANGING THE RULE.
HERE’S THE POINT.
EACH WEEKEND WE SEE PLAYERS TRYING TO OUTDO ONE ANOTHER WITH SOME
KIND OF SHOWMANSHIP THAT DISTRACTS FROM THE GAME ITSELF.
LAST WEEKEND SAN FRANCISCO QUARTERBACK COLIN KAEPERNICK SCORED A
THIRD QUARTER TOUCHDOWN AND THEN MOCKED CAROLINA’S QB CAM NEWTON’S
SUPERMAN ROUTINE.
PANTHERS FANS WERE IRATE OF COURSE
I WAS RAISED IN THE ERA WHEN YOU SCORED A TOUCHDOWN AND HANDED THE
BALL TO THE REF AND WENT TO THE SIDELINES
FOOTBALL WAS NOT SOME KIND OF TRAVELING VAUDEVILLE SHOW.
IT WAS A GAME WITH A TON OF VIOLENCE BUT ALSO A DEEP RESPECT FOR YOUR
OPPONENT.
I HONESTLY GET IT.
THE GAMES, WATCHED BY MILLIONS, HAS EVOLVED INTO MORE THAN JUST FOOTBALL.
IT’S A SOCIAL EVENT AND PURE ENTERTAINMENT FOR MANY.
BUT I WILL TELL YOU THIS.
THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE IS CONCERNED THAT ITS BECOMING A PROBLEM
AND WORRIED THAT ITS OUT OF HAND.
TOUCHDOWN CELEBRATIONS WERE PRETTY INNOCUOUS A FEW YEARS AGO WHEN
BILLY “WHITE SHOES” JOHNSON WAS DOING A KNEE KNOCKING ROUTINE.
WE’VE HAVE PENS HIDDEN IN THE GOAL POSTS, FAKE CELL PHONE CALLS AND
POMPONS BANNED FROM THE CELEBRATIONS.
WHO CAN FORGET TERRELL OWENS TAKING A FAKE NAP AFTER SCORING A
TOUCHDOWN A FEW YEARS AGO.
IT USED TO BE JUST ON THE OFFENSE NOW IT SEEMS EVERY DEFENSIVE PLAYER
HAS A ROUTINE ALSO.
NO ONE WANTS N F L TO STAND FOR “NO FUN LEAGUE” BUT ITS TIME FOR
SOME THE CRAZYNESS TO END.
IF I WAS THE REFEREE AND SOME PLAYER JUMPED UP AND GAVE A BIG FIRST
DOWN SIGNAL I WOULD GIVE HIM A BAD SPOT.
BUT THAT’S JUST ME!
THIS IS GEORGE HALE WITH MY PERSPECTIVE ON SPORTS….
