SO INSTANT REPLAY HAS NOW SPILLED OVER INTO BASEBALL.

GEORGE HALE  LET’S US KNOW HOW HE FEELS ABOUT IT..

THE BIG NEWS THIS BASEBALL SEASON HAS BEEN INSTANT REPLAY.

LOVE IT OR HATE IT THE MODERN DIGITAL AGE IS WITH US.

I’M NOT GOING OVER ALL THE TECHNICAL DETAILS OF HOW THEY DO IT BUT IT IS VERY SOPHISTICATED AND AVAILABLE IN ALL BALLPARKS THROUGH NEW YORK.

BUT RIGHT OR WRONG INSTANT REPLAY WAS NEVER INTENDED TO ACHIEVE PERFECTION IN A SPORT WITH SO MANY MOVING PARTS.

BASICALLY MANAGERS CAN CHALLENGE ONE PLAY A GAME OR TWO IF SUCESSFUL ON THE FIRST CHALLENGE THROUGH SIX INNINGS.

UMPIRES CAN INITIATE REPLAY REVIEWS FROM THE SEVENTH INNING ON.

SO AS WE ENTER THIS NEW ERA LET’S GET A FEW THINGS STRAIGHT.

UMPIRES, ON BALANCE, GET THE CALL CORRECT MOST OF THE TIME.

THE MEN IN BLUE ARE BETTER AT IT THAN THE MANAGERS, COACHES, PLAYERS AND YES THE FANS.

THOSE INVOLVED IN THE GAME AS PARTICIPANTS OR SPECTATORS HAVE A BUILT IN BIAS AS TO THE OUTCOME.

UMPIRES ARE THE NEUTRAL FACES OF THE GAME.

BUT, LIKE ALL HUMAN ENDEVORS MISTAKES AND MISSED CALLS CAN AND DO OCCUR.

THAT IS WHERE INSTANT REPLAY COMES IN.

GAME CHANGING MOMENTS SHOULD BE REVIEWED.

FOOTBALL, HOCKEY AND BASKETBALL TO NAME A FEW HAVE INSTITUTED REPLAY TO SOLVE GAME CHANGING DECISIONS.

THIS BASEBALL SEASON IS YOUNG AND WE NEED TO SEE A LOT MORE OF THE SEASON BEFORE MAKING A KNEE JERK REACTION BUT A COUPLE OF THINGS ARE OBVIOUS.

THE LENGTH OF MAJOR LEAGUE GAMES IS AT AN ALL TIME HIGH AND INSTANT REPLAY IS ADDING TO THE LENGTH.

SO FAR GAMES ARE RUNNING THREE HOURS AND FIVE MINUTES ON AVERAGE.

LAST YEAR THE TIME OF GAMES AVERAGED TWO HOURS AND FIFTY EIGHT MINUTES.

NOT HUGE BUT CLIMBING.

THE BIGGEST FLAW I CAN FIND IN THE SYSTEM IS ALLOWING MANAGERS TO BE PART OF THE DECISION.

THE MAJOR LEAGUE SKIPPERS ARE USING ALL MEANS OF DELAY BEFORE MAKING A “CHALLENGE”.

THE REASON IS THAT CLUBS EMPLOY VIDEO STAFF TO VIEW THE PLAY AND THEN SIGNAL THE MANAGER IF THEY HAVE A CHANCE TO OVERTURN.

REMEMBER THE DECISION MUST BE ‘CLEAR AND CONVINCING” OR THE FIELD CALL STANDS.

SO IN REALITY, AT LEAST SO FAR, NOT MANY CALLS ARE BEING OVERTURNED.

ANOTHER PROBLEM IS THAT MANAGERS WILL MAKE A CHALLENGE IN THE FIFTH INNING BEFORE THEY LOSE IT ANYWAY.

MORE TIME WASTED.

FOR PURISTS LIKE ME I GUESS I WILL HAVE TO GET USED TO MISSING THOSE COLORFUL MOMENTS WHEN BILLY MARTIN OR EARL WEAVER WOULD COME TEARING OUT OF THE DUGOUT KICKING DIRT ON THE BASE OR UMPS PANTS.

NOW WE CAN HAVE A GENTLEMANLY CONVERSATION.

ONE IMPROVEMENT WOULD BE THAT ALL CHALLENGES WOULD HAVE TO BE IMMEDIATE AND FROM THE DUGOUT AND NOT ON THE FIELD.

THAT WOULD ELIMINATE THE LONG SLOW WALK TO VISIT THE UMP.

WE ALL KNOW THE BIGGEST GAME CHANGER IN BASEBALL IS BALLS AND STRIKES AND NO ONE IN THE GAME WANTS TO INSTITUTE ELECTRONIC UMPIRING OF THE
STRIKE ZONE BUT UMPS NEED TO BE CONSISTENT.

THE HUMAN ELEMENT OF BASEBALL HAS ALWAYS BEEN ONE OF THE BEAUTIFUL THINGS ABOUT OUR NATIONAL PASTIME.

BASEBALL IS NOT FOOTBALL OR BASKETBALL OR HOCKEY OR ANYTHING ELSE.

BASEBALL HAS A BEAUTY ALL ITS OWN AND YELLING ” WE GOT ROBBED” HAS ALWAYS AND SHOULD BE A PART OF IT.

THIS IS GEORGE HALE WITH MY PERSPECTIVE ON SPORTS.
