AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — A Sidney man who has been held in jail or a state psychiatric facility since his arrest in July 2012 on charges of raping a 4-year-old girl he was baby-sitting has asked a judge to be freed on bail.

A lawyer for 24-year-old Eric Bard asked a judge during an arraignment Tuesday in Kennebec County Superior Court to release his client into the care of mother with electronic monitoring on $25,000 bail.

Bard has been held on $100,000 bail.

The judge did not immediately rule.

Bard faces 21 charges, including gross sexual assault and sexual exploitation of a minor, for allegedly assaulting the child in 2011 and 2012. Not guilty pleas were entered on Bard’s behalf.

Bard’s attorney says his client has a “history of intellectual, social and physical limitations.”
