Calais Hospital Facing Budget Deficit

Just two months into its fiscal year, Calais Regional Hospital is facing a deficit of more than a half million dollars.

The hospital’s CEO says the budget gap is due to fewer patients being treated, increased charity care, unpaid patient bills, and changes in reimbursement.

The hospital has laid off four employees and reduced hours for 82 others across numerous departments. We’re told the hospital employs about 260 people.

Several projects are also underway to reduce costs, including heating fuel conversion and improvements to the billing process.
