The Boston Marathon is right around the corner, and the Better Business Bureau is cautioning consumers to watch out for fake marathon charities.

First, do your homework to determine if a charity is trustworthy.

Also, check to see if it’s registered with the state.

Make sure charities respect victims and their families. They should have permission to use these people’s names and photos.

Find out exactly where the money will go.

Don’t click on unfamiliar links in emails or text messages, which can steal your personal information.

And lastly, check to see if the charity is tax-exempt.
