Chemically powered cars are headed from Orono to Connecticut this weekend.
Engineering students from the University of Maine are travelling south for the Northeast Regional Chem-E-Car competition.
Thursday afternoon, participants were trying to perfect their creations.
The goal is to carry a specified load over a determined distance and stop as close to the finish line as possible.
UMaine senior Barbara Bemis said, “We are having a little bit of trouble putting everything together right now. The car is just not giving enough power. It spins the wheels but as soon as it has all the weight of the car it doesn’t go anywhere so we need to figure out what is wrong with the fuel cell we’re using.”
The competition begins Saturday at the University of Connecticut.
The program is sponsored by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
