Gov. LePage’s administration says nearly $14 million of Maine-issued welfare benefits were spent out of state last year.
The Governor is seeking to ban the use of electronic benefit cards outside of Maine. His administration says the use of the cards in places like Disney World show that they’re being misused and that the benefits should go to those who truly need them.
Democrats rolled back LePage’s proposal in committee last week and supported an amended version directing the state to study the out-of-state use of EBT cards instead. Democrats say the administration should use its resources to go after fraud instead of limiting the use altogether.
Attorney General Janet Mills told lawmakers that the governor’s proposal could create legal challenges by restricting the right to travel.
