AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — A Maine legislative committee is examining a proposal from Republican Gov. Paul LePage under which the state ethics panel would have to determine the verity of claims made by candidates for office.
The governor’s bill would direct the Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices to investigate campaign claims, following a complaint by a candidate for governor or state Legislature. The panel would have to make a public statement if the claim is deemed false.
LePage spokeswoman Adrienne Bennett said the bill is his “attempt to bring civility to this process” and urged lawmakers to have an honest discussion about the proposal.
The Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee will consider the bill on Wednesday.
