A free meningitis vaccine will be available this week in Bangor.
Health and Community Services is offering it.
They’re partnering with the Husson Pharmacy School.
Medical officials at the clinic say kids are now starting to get the vaccine between the ages of 11 and 12 with a booster at 16.
They say teens over 16 that haven’t yet gotten it should only need it once.
Officials say those entering college are highly encouraged to get the vaccine. They say it’s a very contagious infection that takes hold quickly.
“If someone gets infected if they’re not immunized they can die within twenty four hours. The symptoms are flu-like, so you kind of let it go. And, being preventable we encourage everyone to get in and get the vaccine,” said Theresa Kelley, RN at the center.
The free vaccine is Thursday from 5 to 7 pm.
It’s at the Bangor Health and Community Services clinic, 103 Texas Avenue.
That’s across from Eastport Hall on the UMA Bangor campus.
It’s for ages 11 to 18.
There will be free food and refreshments.
