The former head of the Maine State Police has been arrested and charged with unlawful sexual contact.
Investigators with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office determined that Andrew Demers, 73, of New Gloucester, had sexual contact with a juvenile under the age of 12 for several months.
Investigators said they conducted several interviews with witnesses and the suspected victim before arresting Demers.
He has been released from the Cumberland County Jail on $5,000 bail and cannot have contact with anyone under age 16.
Col. Bob Williams of the Maine State Police confirmed Demers is the retired Chief of the Maine State Police.
Demers was named head of the Maine State Police in 1987 and was the chief for six years, according to state records.
