Updated 11 months ago

The former head of the Maine State Police has been arrested and charged with unlawful sexual contact.

Investigators with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office determined that Andrew Demers, 73, of New Gloucester, had sexual contact with a juvenile under the age of 12 for several months.

Investigators said they conducted several interviews with witnesses and the suspected victim before arresting Demers.

He has been released from the Cumberland County Jail on $5,000 bail and cannot have contact with anyone under age 16.

Col. Bob Williams of the Maine State Police confirmed Demers is the retired Chief of the Maine State Police.

Demers was named head of the Maine State Police in 1987 and was the chief for six years, according to state records.

My question is this, WAS this happening while he was Chief of the Maine State Police?

I agree, this raises so many questions in my mind. when someone is is a place of power such as cheif of the state police, and then is accused of such a horrible crime, one has to wonder what else he may have used his “power” to get away with.

This is so sick and so sad. I hope that they do not give him and bail. And if they give him bail I hope that it will be like 2 million cash.

This little 12 year old is prob. not the first little person he has touched…I mean look at the Ellsworth police department…Officer Andrew Weatherbee is still a officer of the law and he was arrested for domestic violence on March of 2013. All charges were dismissed!!! Then there is Mrs.Mary N. Kellett, Assistant District Attorney yeah she wont do any time nor lose any sleep… I Agree with Davida Willette!!

Disgusting! The report stated the child is only 4 and also a relative. He should not be allowed out of jail!

This is so sickening!! Children are supposed to be able to trust the police!! I hope the victim can get some good counseling and not let this effect them for the rest of their life! My thoughts and prayers go out to victim and his/her family. As stated in below posts, was this happening while he was the chief of the police???

Most police are total scum on a power trip. Trust them even less than politicians.

It would shock you to know how many cops are child molesters and wife beaters. Kinda comes with the territory. Their need to dominate other people is the reason they become cops in the first place. Then they say they became cops because they like “helping” people.

According to Paul Craig Roberts, a former editor of the Wall Street Journal and former assistant secretary to the treasury under Ronald Reagan, “Police in the US now rival criminals, and exceed terrorists as the greatest threat to the American public.”
