Unity College Mourns Death of First Faculty Member

Unity College is mourning the death of the school’s first faculty member.

In 1965, the year Unity was founded, Donald Mortland began teaching English there.

For the next 30 years, he would do that plus chair committees, produce plays, and support the college in many ways.

Students had the highest regard for him. Many continued to visit with him and write to him long after they had graduated.

He grew up in Searsport, served in the Army during World War II, and earned degrees from Bowdoin College and Yale.

Donald Mortland was 87.
