AUBURN, Maine (AP) — A Sabattus man charged with sexually molesting a young girl repeatedly over several years has been sentenced to serve 15 years in prison.

Michael Gagnier was sentenced Wednesday in Androscoggin County Superior Court to serve 15 years of a 25-year sentence and 18 years of probation.

The 34-year-old Gagnier pleaded guilty last month to 10 counts of felony sexual assault.

Prosecutors say he assaulted the girl starting when she was 10. The sexual assaults lasted until the victim was 13 and told a friend, who told authorities.

The Sun Journal, reports that the judge did not think the punishment was severe enough, but deferred to the sentence agreed upon by prosecutors and the defense.

Gagnier apologized in court and said he took full responsibility for his actions.
