Independent Testing Shows Acceptable Levels of THM’s in Veazie

The latest test results are in for water in the Orono-Veazie water district.

The town hired a lab from Kennebunk to test ten homes for chemicals known as THM’s

The EPA says measurements more than 80 parts per billion can cause health problems including liver, kidney, or central nervous system ailments, as well as an increased risk of cancer.

Test results ranged from a low of 54.9 to a high of 70.

THM’s form when disinfectants mix with organic matter in water treatment.

The district exceeded the limit in 2012, and was required by the state to fix it.

Local leaders say they need a new water source.

The maine drinking water program recently approved a $300,000 loan for a new well.
