Maine Court Denies Mercier Plea

The Maine State Supreme Court has upheld a decision that sent a man to prison for 70 years for murder.

Jay Mercier of industry was convicted in 2012 of murdering a woman who died more than three decades ago.

Court documents say, in his appeal, Mercier claimed his rights were violated when Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Margaret Greenwald testified, because she was not the one who did the autopsy or wrote the autopsy report.

The court concluded that a medical examiner relying on information from another examiner for testimony did not violate Mercier’s constitutional rights.
